Private Pilot License (PPL)
Your first step into aviation. Train at Fox Field (KWJF) to avoid the marine layer, master crosswind techniques, and fly upgraded 180HP Cessnas.
The Foundation of Your Aviation Journey
The Private Pilot License (PPL) is where it all begins. Whether you dream of commanding an airliner or simply want the freedom to fly friends and family for a weekend getaway, this is your entry point into the skies.
At MH Aviation, we don’t just teach you to pass a test; we teach you to command an aircraft. Located at Fox Field (KWJF) in the high desert, our training environment offers distinct advantages over the Los Angeles basin. You will learn to handle real wind conditions and high-density altitudes from day one, making you a sharper, safer, and more competent pilot than those trained in calm, sea-level air.
Program Overview
* MH Aviation instructors are independent contractors and are not employees of MH Aviation.
- • Must be at least 16 years old to solo
- • U.S. Citizen (or TSA clearance)
- • Hold a Student Pilot & FAA Medical Certificate
- • Proficiency in English
What to Expect During Training
Flight training at MH Aviation is designed to be efficient and uninterrupted. While the FAA minimum is 40 hours, the national average often creeps up to 60–70 hours due to inconsistency. Our goal is to get you closer to the minimums by removing the friction: our planes work, and the weather cooperates.
- Pre-flight inspection and aircraft systems mastery
- Radio communication and airspace navigation
- Takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds
- Solo flight (your first flight alone)
- Cross-country flight planning
Discovery Flight
Ready to Take the Controls?
The best way to understand the freedom of flight is to experience it yourself. Book a discovery flight to sit in the pilot's seat, hold the yoke, and see if aviation is right for you.
Your Training Arsenal
We believe that a student is only as good as their tools. That's why we don't rely on tired, underpowered trainers. Our fleet is upgraded to meet the demands of modern training and high-desert flying.
The Aircraft
- Cessna 172N/P Models known for stability and forgiveness
- 180 HP Engine Conversions for superior climb performance
- Garmin G5 Digital Displays for modern glass-cockpit proficiency
The Support
- In-house maintenance (we own the shop) ensuring high aircraft availability
- No waitlists for scheduling
- Mentorship from instructors who view you as family, not a number
The Fox Field Advantage
Weather, Wind, and Maintenance
Most flight schools in the LA basin fight a daily battle against the 'marine layer'—heavy morning fog that grounds flights and cancels lessons. At Fox Field (KWJF), we are above the fog. This means you fly more days per year, maintain your learning momentum, and finish your license faster.
Built for Competence
Our high-desert location provides consistent wind conditions. While other students fear the wind, you will learn to use it. You will graduate as a pilot who is comfortable in crosswinds and high-density altitude situations, making you safer and more skilled than the average PPL graduate.
- No Marine Layer = Fewer Cancellations
- In-House Maintenance = No 'Broken Plane' delays
- 180HP Fleet = Real power for real flying
The Cost Efficiency
Time is money in aviation. By reducing weather cancellations and maintenance downtime, we help you finish closer to the FAA minimum of 40 hours, saving you thousands compared to the national average of 60–70 hours.

Common Questions About
Earning Your PPL
How much does it cost to get a Private Pilot License at MH Aviation?
Training costs vary based on individual proficiency, but our rates are highly competitive starting at approximately $155/hr (Wet) for our Cessna 172 fleet. Unlike schools that hide fees, we offer transparent pricing. Because our aircraft are maintained in-house, you avoid the 'maintenance gaps' that cause students to regress and spend more money on review flights.
How long will it take to finish my flight training?
The FAA minimum is 40 hours, but the national average is closer to 60–70 hours. At MH Aviation, our students often finish closer to the minimums because of our open availability and high desert weather. Without the 'marine layer' canceling flights, you can fly more consistently and reach proficiency faster.
Why is Fox Field (Lancaster) better for training than LA basin airports?
Training at Fox Field (KWJF) gives you a distinct advantage: consistent flyable weather and real crosswind experience. While students in the LA basin are grounded by morning fog, you are flying. Additionally, the high desert environment teaches you superior energy management and stick-and-rudder skills that 'calm weather' pilots often lack.
Are there budget-friendly training options?
While we do not offer direct financing, our rates are among the most competitive in the region ($155/hr vs $205/hr average). Our 'pay-as-you-go' model allows you to maintain full control over your training budget without long-term financial commitments.
What aircraft will I be flying?
You will train in the industry-standard Cessna 172N/P models. However, ours are upgraded for modern relevance. Our fleet features 180 HP engine conversions for better climb performance and Garmin G5 digital displays (Glass Cockpit), ensuring you are comfortable with both traditional and modern avionics.
What happens if an aircraft needs maintenance?
This is the MH Aviation difference. We own a Part 145 Repair Station. While other schools wait weeks for outside mechanics, our fleet is prioritized in our own hangar. We minimize downtime so your training momentum is never interrupted by a broken airplane.
What are the prerequisites to start flight training?
You can start flying immediately! To solo, you must be at least 16 years old, able to read, speak, and understand English, and hold a Student Pilot Certificate and FAA Medical Certificate. To take your final checkride, you must be 17 years old.
Is the Private Pilot License the first step to an airline career?
Yes. The PPL is the foundation of all future ratings. Once you earn this license, you can proceed to your Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot License. Our 'Zero to Airlines' track is designed to take you from this first step all the way to professional employment.
Do I need to be good at math to be a pilot?
You do not need complex calculus. Pilot math is practical—calculating fuel burn, time en route, and weight and balance. Our instructors teach you simple, rule-of-thumb methods to handle these calculations easily in the cockpit.
How do I get started?
The best way to start is with a Discovery Flight. You will go up with an instructor, take the controls, and see the high desert from above. It’s the perfect way to confirm your passion for aviation before enrolling.
