Client Feedback

Trusted When It Matters Most

“I have to say, this is hands down the best flight school experience I've had in the Greater Los Angeles area. MH Aviation offers the most budget-friendly options without skimping on quality. The pricing is unbeatable compared to other schools in the greater LA region. The airport and airspace are perfect for focused multi-engine instruction – no dealing with constant conflicting traffic in the practice areas or sharing the pattern with a bunch of other students. The service is truly first-class. Having an in-house maintenance shop means any issues get addressed ASAP, keeping the aircraft in top shape and minimizing downtime. MH Aviation Flight School delivers the best value and overall experience you could ask for. Highly recommend for anyone pursuing flight training in Southern California!”

FAQ

Common Questions About the PPL + IR Track

Why should I combine Private Pilot and Instrument Rating training?

Momentum is the secret to flight training efficiency. By transitioning directly from your Private Pilot License (PPL) into your Instrument Rating (IR), you maintain muscle memory and study habits. This often results in fewer review hours and a lower total cost compared to pilots who take a long break between ratings.

How does the weather at Fox Field (KWJF) affect my timeline?

This is our biggest advantage. Unlike schools in the LA Basin or coastal areas that are grounded by the 'marine layer' fog most mornings until noon, Lancaster's High Desert offers 300+ flyable days a year. You fly while others are waiting on the tarmac.

Will I train on modern avionics or older steam gauges?

You will train on a fleet modernized for the 21st century. Our Cessna 172s have received a $150,000 avionics upgrade, featuring Garmin G5 digital displays. This ensures you master the glass cockpit environment required for modern Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations.

Are there flexible ways to pay for both ratings?

Our 'pay-as-you-go' structure is designed to be the most budget-friendly way to earn your PPL and IR. At just $155/hr (wet), our rates are significantly lower than the regional average of $205/hr. This allows you to fund your training as you progress, avoiding the high interest rates and debt associated with traditional student loans.

Do you offer 'actual' instrument conditions or just simulated?

We offer both. While we use vision-limiting devices for simulation, our fully IFR-certified fleet allows us to file flight plans and fly in actual cloud layers when safe and appropriate. This real-world experience is invaluable for building true pilot confidence.

What happens if a plane needs maintenance?

We don't wait for outside mechanics. MH Aviation owns an in-house Part 145 Repair Station. This means our aircraft are prioritized for inspections and repairs, virtually eliminating the weeks-long maintenance delays common at other flight schools.

Is the Instrument Rating really necessary if I just want to fly for fun?

The Instrument Rating is often called the 'safety rating.' It is the single best investment you can make for your longevity as a pilot. It gives you the skills to survive inadvertent entry into clouds and allows you to depart on trips even when the weather isn't perfect.

How do the 180HP engine conversions help my training?

Fox Field is at a higher elevation, where air density is lower. Standard engines struggle to climb here. Our 180HP conversions provide the surplus power needed for safe, strong climbs, giving you a performance margin that increases safety during your primary training.

What are the prerequisites to start?

You must be at least 16 years old to solo (17 to get your license), be a U.S. citizen (or have TSA clearance), read and speak English, and hold an FAA Medical Certificate. We can guide you through obtaining your medical before you fly.

Can I switch to the Professional Pilot track later?

Absolutely. The PPL and IR are the exact first two steps of the professional Commercial Pilot track. If you decide to make a career out of it, every hour you fly in this program counts directly toward your Commercial license requirements.
