Multi-Engine Training Questions
How quickly can I complete the Multi-Engine Rating (AMEL) add-on?
Speed is a priority. Because this is typically an 'add-on' rating for existing pilots, we structure it as an accelerated course. With our open scheduling and in-house maintenance ensuring the twin is ready, most proficient students complete the training and checkride prep in 7 to 14 days.
What aircraft will I fly for my Multi-Engine training?
You will train in the Piper Twin Comanche. We chose this airframe because it offers the perfect balance of complexity and stability. It is an excellent platform for mastering asymmetric thrust and energy management without the prohibitive fuel costs of heavier twins.
Do I need a Complex or High-Performance endorsement before starting?
No. The Multi-Engine training itself satisfies the requirements for operating complex aircraft (retractable gear, constant speed propellers, flaps). You will log the necessary training and receive the endorsements as part of your Multi-Engine curriculum.
Why is training at Fox Field (High Desert) better for multi-engine pilots?
It comes down to performance reality. Single-engine performance is the most critical safety factor in a twin. Training at Fox Field's density altitude forces you to manage energy precisely. If you can master a single-engine climb here, you can handle an engine failure anywhere.
How do you handle maintenance delays for the twin-engine fleet?
Twin-engine aircraft are complex and prone to maintenance downtime at other schools. At MH Aviation, we own the Part 145 Repair Station. Our aircraft are prioritized, meaning you won't lose weeks of proficiency waiting for a mechanic. We keep the props turning.
Does this rating count toward the 25 hours of multi-engine time required by airlines?
Yes. Every hour flown in our multi-engine aircraft counts toward the specific multi-engine experience requirements mandated by regional and major airlines (ATP minimums). If you need to build more time after the rating, we recommend our MEI (Multi-Engine Instructor) track.
Is it safe to practice engine failures in flight?
Safety is non-negotiable. Our instructors are experts in Vmc (Minimum Controllable Airspeed) awareness. We practice engine-out procedures at safe altitudes and strictly adhere to 'zero-thrust' simulations to protect both the student and the airframe while ensuring you are checkride-ready.
Can I combine the Multi-Engine Rating with my Commercial Pilot training?
Absolutely. Many students choose to do their initial Commercial checkride in the multi-engine aircraft. This is an efficient way to 'kill two birds with one stone,' logging complex time and earning a higher-level certificate simultaneously.
What are the prerequisites to enroll in the Multi-Engine course?
You must hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate with a valid FAA Medical. You do not need an Instrument Rating to add a Multi-Engine class rating, though having one allows you to fly the twin in IFR conditions (which we highly recommend for career pilots).
How does the 'contact for pricing' structure work for this rating?
Because the Multi-Engine rating is performance-based, total cost varies by student proficiency. We provide a customized estimate based on your current flight experience. Contact us directly to get a quote that includes aircraft rental, fuel (Wet), and instructor fees.
